Named for a stretch of rich farmland along the Kentucky River, Rock Hill Farms is a fine single barrel bourbon. The limestone waters of the Kentucky River that wind through Bluegrass country and alongside Buffalo Trace Distillery nourish the land and provide the distinct flavor to Rock Hill Farms.

A masterful union of three well-bred bourbons. One, a 14-year extra-aged ryed bourbon. Two, an 8-year ryed bourbon. And three, another 8-year ryed bourbon, finished in sauternes wine casks from the Bordeaux region of France for a balance of sweetness with additional spice.

Bottled directly from the barrels, reflecting the production of whiskey in the days before Prohibition. Aromas of cooked berries with rich caramel and slightly floral notes mingle with bold flavors of spice and toasty vanilla, dried oak and pepper for a lingering fruit finish.

This is rye whiskey with a "swagger" that only comes from a decade-plus of dancing with the wood.

The Profile: Power, Spice, and Structural Depth

While younger ryes are often characterized by "green" herbal notes, this 12-year expression has moved into the realm of dark sugars and deep spice. The extra time in the barrel has rounded the rye’s natural "bite" into a sophisticated, warming complexity.

• Nose: An immediate, aromatic invitation of salted caramel, dark chocolate-covered ginger, and aged oak. Secondary notes of mint leaf, clove, and a hint of dusty warehouse funk emerge as it breathes.

• Palate: Full-bodied and authoritative. Expect a rich, oily texture that delivers waves of maple syrup, toasted rye bread, and black pepper. Mid-palate, you'll find a delightful transition into stone fruit—think dried apricots and cherry skins.

• Finish: Long, dry, and triumphant. The "Bottled-in-Bond" 100 proof provides the perfect heat, tapering into cinnamon stick, cigar box, and a lingering sweetness of vanilla bean.

At 12 years old, the rye grain has fully integrated with the charred American oak, creating an experience that rivals the most sought-after ryes in the country. The barrel is toasted lightly, rather than heavily charred in the style of a traditional bourbon barrel. The lighter toast on this second barrel imparts different flavors—they produce more baking spice flavors like cinnamon and vanilla, as opposed to the deeper burnt sugar and oak notes that come from charring. Light wood, fresh dough, fresh washed mushrooms and a hint of smoke are all present. Honey, vanilla and light caramel jumped out at me with a subtle hint of smoke on the palate. Surprisingly a strong sense of smoked wood was very present at the start of this finish.

First Bottled in 2014 with continual later releases, Barterhouse is one of the rare vintages from Diageo's Orphan Barrel Series, a series of bottles coming from barrels of bourbon discovered from abandoned or forgotten rickhouses and distilleries. Twenty years in American Oak will make your average spirit a bit mellow. Take all the fight out. Well, this here is no ordinary spirit, and twenty years is long enough to pick up a trick or two. For one barrel in particular, it was long enough to develop the gift of a silver tongue. The old Stitzel-Weller rickhouse hands had it written off as a rumor. A character so smooth, it could clean out the card sharps and take the shirt off a traveling salesman's back. But the rumors were true. And when the chips are in, a smooth operator can be mighty persuasive indeed. One sip of Barterhouse Kentucky Straight Bourbon Whiskey and you just might find yourself forgiving Robert Johnson for trading his soul to the very devil himself.
