This latest release of the legendary Chichibu’s single malt exclusive to the US is heavily peated whisky vatted from over fourteen casks. The base is aged in T5 virgin French oak barrels and married with a variety of supporting casks, including sherry, mizunara hog’s head, and chibi daru quarter casks. Aromas of orange peel, mint, loquat, and melon are followed by a rich palate of soft sweetness yielding to a nutty herbal finish. These annual editions of Ichiro Akuto’s single malt whisky serve as a strong reminder that they are all history in the making.

The latest edition of Chichibu’s exclusive release to the U.S. features an anachronistic label change featuring Commodore Matthew Perry enjoying a dram of Ichiro’s whiskey in the U.S. Capitol surrounded by the cherry blossom trees gifted from Tokyo Mayor Yukio Ozaki and Dr. Jokichi Takamine in 1909.

Chichibu Distillery has its roots all the way back to the 1940s when Ichiro’s family started producing whisky at Hanyu Distillery. Eventually, the downturn of whisky in the 1990s forced Hanyu to close its doors. Ichiro still releases some of the Hanyu whisky under the Playing Card series. This whisky has become legendary alongside the whisky produced at his now-owned distillery, Chichibu. In 2008 he built his current distillery and has quickly become a Japanese Whisky fan favorite. Ichiro's Single Malt is a limited edition whisky produced by Chichibu Distillery in Saitama, Japan. It is made from 100% malted Concerto two row barley, milled and mashed in-house and fermented in Mizunara washbacks for 90-100 hours. The whisky is then distilled in Forsyths copper pot stills and aged in a combination of a sherry hogshead and ex-IPA, imperial stout, and hopped cider casks. The 2022 Edition of the US bottling of Ichiro's Single Malt is a blend of nine casks with a focus on barrels that previously held India pale ale, imperial stout, and hopped cider, lending subtle notes of tropical fruit and citrus. Bottled at cask strength without additives or coloring, this non-chill filtered whisky has an ABV of 53.5% and is limited to 2233 bottles. After a four-year absence, the popular peated Chichibu expression has made its return! The Chichibu distillery, founded by Ichiro Akuto, began production in February 2008. It was the first new distillery in Japan since 1973, when Suntory opened Hakushu. Chichibu is located about 70 kilometres northwest of Tokyo. The local climate, with humid summers and cold winters, provides excellent conditions for maturing whisky. Chichibu The Peated 2022 is a complex single malt with a good balance of intense peat and fruitiness. On the nose, you’ll find aromas of light peat, campfire smoke, iodine, gentle custard, peach, apple, black tea and vanilla. The peat smoke develops on the palate with notes of iodine, lemon, bright fruits, caramel, vanilla and pepper. The finish is long with lingering bitter chocolate, peat smoke and citrus fruits.
