• T8ke's Tasting Notes:Warm pancakes and honey on the nose, syrupy and tobacco driven with lovely cinnamon, caramels, brown sugar and savory spices. It reminds me of our Pancake Breakfast release from way back in 2021 and it is lovely. Palate is rich and creamy, maple, blackberry, spicy rye, sweet cream and a hint of peaches, pancake syrup, and savory oak. Long finish, beautifully balanced at one of the higher proof releases I've had recently.

At 92 proof & one of our oldest whiskeys, this is the first WhistlePig product finished in Vermont Estate Oak harvested right from our farm. Vermont oak has more rings than the standard oak used in whiskey barrels, and each ring is an opportunity to impart more flavor and depth in the whiskey. With a score of 97 points from Wine Enthusiast and perfected over 15 years, we are proud to offer this pure expression of Vermont’s best. Deep and rich, dominated by caramel, vanilla, and oak with hints of allspice and burnt orange on the nose. Warm, rich, and slightly creamy. Loads of butterscotch and baking spice with leather and a hint of tobacco. Ultra long and rich, warm, and inviting finish.

This 5th. edition of The Boss Hog, The Spirit of Mauve, is a 13 Year Straight Rye Whiskey finished in Calvados Casks in honor of our celebrity pet pig, Mauve’s undying love of apples. Mulled cider, cardamom, candied ginger and a touch of piper tobacco. Caramel, vanilla and gentle Rye spice develops with time in the glass. Maple syrup and pears are balanced by dark chocolate and French oak spice. With water, the spice moves front and center and a vibrant, fruit-forward character develops. Lasting spice and a touch of charred oak and caramel, maple syrup lingers as the finish fades.

The Boss Hog Edition is the first American Whiskey finished using Japanese Umeshu, the result of a true collaboration between WhistlePig and Kitaya brewery on Japan’s Kyushu island. This well aged Straight Rye Whiskey was created using koji fermentation. Each bottle is adorned with The Samurai Scientist – Jōkichi Takamine – who pioneered koji fermentation in the American whisky industry over a century ago. Intensely aromatic, with cinnamon, maple, and toasted marshmallow that develops with time in the glass. Tobacco, ginger, baking spices, and savory umami creating a remarkably rich, nuanced and elegant profile lending to soft, sweet notes that further color the mosaic of flavor.

This particular bottle is the special edition of the 11th Boss Hog Release.  The Holi edition was inspired by the color festival and has Hindi writing on the label and a painted colored topper.  Allegedly only 2000 of this version of The Juggernaut were created.  A must have for boss hog collectors!

WhistlePig has become the blockbuster franchise of whiskey. Every release generates the kind of anticipation usually reserved for summer Marvel releases. 

Their Boss Hog series, now in its twelfth year (and having picked up some major hardware over the years: Best in Show at the San Francisco World Spirits Competition, Best of the Best by Robb Report multiple times, and Best Rye Whiskey at various competitions), remains the most collectible limited edition series in American whiskey, a simply stunning accomplishment, given how many distilleries are desperately trying to create their own cult followings.

Now comes Boss Hog XII: Feather & Flame: a single barrel, cask strength rye that takes a hard left turn into ancient Mexico tradition.

Matured in Pulque Curado de Cacao barrels, which have been seasoned with agave-fermented pulque and cured with cacao and Mexican chili peppers, it somehow manages to summon the complex essence of Xocolatl, the sacred chili chocolate drink that neither the Aztecs nor we, it seems, are able to get enough of.

It's the world's first Pulque Curado barrel finish for rye whiskey, because, apparently, regular barrel finishes have become too pedestrian for WhistlePig's ambitions. It also happens to be among WhistlePig's oldest rye whiskeys, not to mention among its most potent (with a powerful proof that clocks in between 104.8-108.4).

From the first nosing, you get caramel, dark chocolate, and orange zest that hints at the wild ride ahead. The palate delivers notes of bright citrus balanced by soft oak and cocoa with wave upon wave of subtle earthy spice, while the finish brings a dramatic one-two burst of savory cacao that gives way, marvelously, to herbaceous chili pepper.

A whisky that defies nearly every expectation … as it dazzles your mind and your palate, both. 

And by the way, the packing is every bit the equal of the liquid within. Each bottle is crowned with an equally collectible Vermont handmade pewter topper depicting a feathered pig deity, wielding Aztec chilis and a traditional chocolate whisk. 

These collectible pewter toppers are designed and cast by hand just 11 miles from the WhistlePig Farm, while each back label features NFC technology for collector registration and authentication.

This is a must-have for rye lovers, for WhistlePig fans — really, for anyone who loves great American craft.

• T8ke's Tasting Notes: A yin to yang of the rye, this barrel of Piggyback bourbon is also Vermont distilled and it's lovely - big, rich, oaky, bold bourbon. Heavy caramel and baking spice, cinnamon and red hots, caramel candies and big oak. The palate is rich, some fruits mingle - berries, cherry and blackberry settle with more pepper and oak. The finish is long, full of vanilla, creamy corn, honey and a hint of tobacco.

• T8ke's Tasting Notes: The quintessential rye king, these Piggyback barrels that are Vermont distilled are awesome crosses of quality and value - tons of big, bold, woody maple, herbal rye spice, toffee and black pepper that screams rye. At 6 years old and barrel strength, there's a rich palate, plenty of oak but without covering up sweet maple, peppy rye spice and an herbal note. Long finish, jammin' and lovely.
