Good conditions throughout the cycle gave us a very high-quality grape juice in 2020, albeit with modest yields. The vines budded early – the Merlot on 19th March and the Cabernet- Sauvignon on 24th March. However, spring weather was erratic and these conditions slowed down vine growth. The second half of May was warm and dry so vegetative growth speeded up again and the vines bloomed two weeks earlier than normal. July 2020 was the driest on record with only 2.5mm of rain and periodic heatwaves. We registered the Merlot’s mid-colour change on 25th July and the Cabernet-Sauvignon followed on 28th July. Hydric stress set in by early August and defoliation became apparent on some of the more fragile plots. 90mm of rain during the second week of August revitalised the vines and the berries began to ripen. The first 15 days of September were dry and this helped keep the vineyard healthy. It’s worth pointing out that for this vintage, all the grapes were picked before the end of September, almost a week earlier than usual. The Merlot harvest began on 9th September and finished on 15th September. The Cabernet-Sauvignon harvest lasted from 17th to 28th September.
