When our master blender discovered the last remaining stores of Orphan Barrel whiskies from years gone by, he thought it only fitting to share these whiskies with the world. He married the remaining stocks of Barterhouse, Forged Oak and various Rhetoric releases with aged rye and corn whiskies to create a masterful blend that pays homage to the original releases yet possesses a distinct profile all its own. This 14-year-old whiskey is a unique balance of age and flavor accenting the rich, creamy character of the orphaned bourbons with the spiciness of the aged rye whiskey. Eagle Rare 10 Year is Buffalo Trace Distillery's low-rye Kentucky straight bourbon, aged at least a full decade and bottled at 90 proof — and over the last few years it has quietly become one of the most hunted "everyday" bottles in America.

W.L. Weller Special Reserve is the green-label introduction to Buffalo Trace Distillery's wheated Weller family — a Kentucky straight bourbon bottled at 90 proof, and quite possibly the most famous "starter bottle" in all of allocated whiskey.

Here's the open secret that built the legend: Weller is widely understood to share Buffalo Trace's wheated mash bill with the Van Winkle line. Buffalo Trace never publishes its recipes, but ask anyone who's spent a Saturday bottle-hunting — what you're holding is the same wheated DNA that goes into Pappy, just younger and considerably easier to actually pour. The name predates all of it: William Larue Weller was selling whiskey in Louisville by 1849, and the label has carried the claim of "the original wheated bourbon" for generations — lore it wears proudly, even if no one alive can notarize it. The brand later passed through Stitzel-Weller, the distillery Pappy Van Winkle himself built, before Sazerac brought it home to Buffalo Trace in 1999. Longtime fans still remember when the label wore a 7-year age statement — it quietly came off years ago, and those age-stated dusties have become minor collectibles in their own right. Is W.L. Weller the same as Pappy Van Winkle?
Same distillery and, by every credible account, the same wheated mash bill — but a different brand with far less barrel time. The Van Winkle bottlings are older and drawn from choicer barrels; Weller Special Reserve is the youngest, most attainable expression of that shared recipe, which is why the community nicknamed the Weller line "Poor Man's Pappy."

Why is Weller Special Reserve so hard to find at retail?
The Pappy connection turned an everyday wheater into an allocated one. Demand for anything wearing the Weller name now far outruns supply, and most stores receive only a handful of green-label bottles at a time — often spoken for before they reach a shelf.

What's the difference between Weller Special Reserve and Weller Antique 107?
Proof, mostly. Special Reserve is the softer 90-proof introduction; Antique 107 runs the same wheated recipe at a bigger, bolder 107. Longtime forum tradition holds that blending the two approximates a certain 15-year bottle — a recipe passed around like a secret handshake.

Some pretty spicy notes, rich with oak on the nose, it's cooled down with fruity figs and plums. Sweet and buttery on the palate, with a surprising hint of orange peel. Some tobacco smokiness follows. The finish is very long indeed, the tobacco notes in full effect.

Michter’s Toasted Barrel Sour Mash Whiskey] is made by taking Michter’s US1 Sour Mash Whiskey and then aging it for an additional period of time in a second custom made barrel. This second barrel is assembled from 18-month air-dried wood and then toasted but not charred. It leaves a nice first impression with honey, mint, and oak with subtle bready notes. Michter’s is sweet and slightly bitter with honey, roasted oak, and a dash of coffee grounds. The toasted barrel finishing introduces a little extra oak bitterness and darkness, but it’s not overdone. Vanilla and orange reveal themselves after a few seconds, but the alcohol remains in the background.

The barrel is toasted lightly, rather than heavily charred in the style of a traditional bourbon barrel. The lighter toast on this second barrel imparts different flavors—they produce more baking spice flavors like cinnamon and vanilla, as opposed to the deeper burnt sugar and oak notes that come from charring. Light wood, fresh dough, fresh washed mushrooms and a hint of smoke are all present. Honey, vanilla and light caramel jumped out at me with a subtle hint of smoke on the palate. Surprisingly a strong sense of smoked wood was very present at the start of this finish.

Bottled directly from the barrels, reflecting the production of whiskey in the days before Prohibition. Aromas of cooked berries with rich caramel and slightly floral notes mingle with bold flavors of spice and toasty vanilla, dried oak and pepper for a lingering fruit finish.

Yamazaki is Suntory's flagship single malt whisky, from Japan's first and oldest malt distillery. This 12 year old first came onto the market in 1984 and was the first seriously marketed Japanese single malt whisky. Since then, it has acquired something of a cult following, and for good reason! This is a variant of Blanton's (sometimes called "Blanton's Red") that is released for the Japanese market. Most Blanton's, including Blanton's Single Barrel, Gold and Straight From The Barrel are around six years old. This Blanton's, along with Blanton's Black, is around eight years old. With raisins, citrus zest and toasted oak on the nose, followed by rye, caramel, oak, and honey on the palate, this bourbon finishes with a hot, dry punch of a finish.

Weller Full Proof Bourbon is a wheated bourbon distilled at the Buffalo Trace Distillery. Bottled at 114 proof, this is the same proof as when the spirit entered the barrel for maturation. The Kentucky straight bourbon is bottled without chill filtration. Baked apples and vanilla are showcased on the nose, along with fiery cinnamon. The palate offers vanilla bean, baking spices, sour cherries, and cassia bark. The finish turns to the drier and more medicinal side, with spearmint, tannic oak, leather, and milk chocolate truffles. Quite sippable despite the high proof, with a pleasantly lengthy finish.

As part of the wheated bourbon family, this twelve year old W.L. Weller is aged far longer than most wheated bourbons. This offering is a smooth, easy-going and balanced offering with a beautiful deep bronze color. Aromas of lanolin, almond, creamed corn and toasty vanilla. The mid-palate flavor is heavily wheated, layered and moderately sweet. Long, oaky, and intensely smooth finish.
