Let's Talk About the Blanton's Problem (You Know the One)
Here's a scene you've probably lived at least once:
You're standing in a liquor store on a Tuesday afternoon, maybe it's someone's birthday this weekend, maybe it's your anniversary, maybe you've just decided it's finally time to add a Blanton's to the shelf. You scan the bourbon section. You find the familiar gold foil font on the shelf tag. And then you look up to find... air. A beautiful, bourbon-shaped hole where that bottle should be. You ask the clerk. They say, "Oh, we get them in sometimes, but they go fast." You nod. You buy something else. You go home slightly defeated.
This is the Blanton's experience for most people. And it's been this way for years.
Why Is Blanton's So Hard to Find?
Blanton's is hard to find because it's exceptional and because the bourbon boom of the last decade sent demand for premium, allocated bottles through the roof while distillery production timelines (bourbon has to age, two years at minimum and usually six to twelve for the good stuff) simply can't keep pace overnight.
Blanton's, produced at Buffalo Trace Distillery in Frankfort, Kentucky, holds a genuinely important place in bourbon history: it was the first commercially marketed single barrel bourbon, introduced in 1984. Before Blanton's, distilleries blended barrels together to achieve consistency. Blanton's flipped that script and every bottle comes from a single, individual barrel, meaning no two bottles are exactly the same.
A mash bill that delivers approachable, crowd-pleasing flavor (caramel, vanilla, citrus, light spice which is the classic Buffalo Trace profile)
93 proof: high enough to be interesting, low enough to share without warning
The unique Blanton’s bottle stoppers: more on those in a moment
A reputation that's crossed over from enthusiast circles to the mainstream gift-giver market
And you've got a bottle that essentially sells itself before it even hits the shelf.
The Blanton's Stopper Situation: A Collector's Game Inside a Bottle
Every bottle of Blanton's Original comes topped with a hand-applied, metal horse-and-jockey stopper. The jockey is in a different position on each of the 8 unique stopper designs, and each one is stamped with a different letter: B, L, A, N, T, O, N, S.
Spell it out. You see what they did there.
Each stopper also features a different position of the horse mid-stride — from a standing start through a full gallop — representing the stages of a race. Enthusiastic bourbon collectors don't just buy bottles, they hunt stoppers. Full sets are displayed, photographed, gifted, and traded. "I just need the B stopper" is a sentence spoken in bourbon circles with the same urgency as a game 7 ticket request.
The 8 Blanton's Stopper Letters and Their Horse & Jockey Positions:
Letter
Horse Position
B
Standing, ears forward
L
First stride, lifting
A
Mid-stride, low
N
Lengthening stride
T
Full extension
O
Peak gallop
N:
Easing, finishing
S
Victory stance
(Note: positions and descriptions can vary slightly by production run, it’s part of the charm.)
Here's where most retailers fail the collector: they'll have Blanton's in stock, but you get whatever stopper is on the bottle. No choices. No communication. Just a random letter in a box.
Which Blanton’s letter stopper is the rarest? Different bourbon collector communities have reported not being able to find the “O” or the “L” but in our experience, our guests are always looking the second “N”, or the “N:” that is followed by a colon or apostrophe.
You could try your luck or find a letter stopper trading group but at The Bourbon Concierge, you can pick which letter stopper you need. We'll do our best to match you. That's the concierge part.
What Makes The Bourbon Concierge Different for Blanton's?
We will not always have the best price on Blanton's. Anyone telling you they are the cheapest and also the most reliable is either cutting corners or about to disappoint you. Allocated bottles like Blanton's carry a premium. That's reality.
What we can promise you:
✅ We're In Stock
Blanton's Original Single Barrel is a staple of our inventory and you will find it in stock consistently. Not a "sign up for the waitlist" situation. We work to keep it on the virtual shelf because we know it's what people come to us for.
✅ No Minimum Order
You don't have to buy a case. You don't have to bundle it with something else to make the shipping math work. You want one bottle? Done. You want six because you're building a stopper collection and your shelf is looking thin? Also done. We don't gate-keep by quantity.
✅ Stopper Selection (When Available)
We know collectors care about this. If you're completing a set, or you want a specific letter for a personalized gift, add your letter choice at checkout. We'll tell you what we have and we'll pull your letter before it ships. That's not something most online retailers even think to offer.
✅ White-Glove Packing and Fast Shipping
Bourbon bottles are not Amazon boxes of socks. We pack every order like it matters because it does. Blanton's ships securely, carefully, and with speed. If you ordered a birthday gift with enough lead time, it'll be there. We've had too many heartbreaking stories of bottles lost in transit with other shippers; we take this part seriously.
✅ A Real Human On The Other End
This is the part people don't expect until they experience it: you can actually reach us. Text, DM, call, email. We respond. If you have a question about your order about whether to add Eagle Rare or W.L. Weller to your cart for a gift, a human being will be on the other to talk it through with you. No AI bots. No ticket queue spirals.
Who Is Blanton Actually Right For? (A Gift Guide In Disguise)
Since a meaningful chunk of Blanton's buyers are looking for gifts; anniversaries, birthdays, retirements, let us walk through why it works so well across a range of recipients. Blanton’s is the standard of a premium gift under $150 for the bourbon collector.
The Bourbon Beginner Who's Ready to Level Up
If someone in your life has been drinking Jim Beam and Crown Royal and is starting to "get curious," Blanton's is a perfect first allocated bottle. The flavor profile is approachable, not challenging, not smoky, not funky and the bottle itself communicates that this is something special. It's a confidence gift: you're saying, I think you're ready for the good stuff.
The Collector Who Has Most of the Basics
If they've got their Eagle Rare, their Weller Antique, their standard Buffalo Trace lineup, Blanton's is the natural next move into allocated territory. Especially if they're missing letters on their topper collection. Ask them what they have. We'll help you fill the gap.
The Anniversary or Milestone Gift
Blanton's hits differently as a gift because it looks like a gift. The distinctive bottle shape, the hand-applied wax top, the metal stopper with that specific little horse figure. You didn't grab it at a gas station. You went out of your way and that matters. Add a handwritten note and you've got a genuinely memorable gift for under $150.
The Whiskey Tourist Visiting Kentucky (or Someone Who Was)
There's a reason Blanton's flies off shelves at the Buffalo Trace gift shop, it's the consummate Kentucky bourbon souvenir. If you have a friend who just did the Bourbon Trail, or is about to, or lives in Kentucky and somehow never bought a bottle — it's a perfect occasion gift.
The Person Who Just Needs a Really Good Bourbon on Their Shelf
Sometimes the occasion is: I drink bourbon, I'm running low, I want Blanton's because I've heard good things and I don't want to drive to seven stores. That's a valid and noble reason. We support you.

Blanton's sits in a genuinely sweet spot: it's allocated and desirable without being comically unobtainable, the price is high enough to signal quality as a gift without being "sell a kidney" territory, and the flavor is crowd-pleasing enough that it won't sit unopened.
(All MSRP and secondary market values are approximate and fluctuate. Secondary prices reflect the current grey market, not what we charge.)
The Rarest Blanton's: A Brief Note for the Obsessives Among You
While we're here, let's give a tip of the hat to the collectors chasing the full Blanton's family:
Blanton's Original — The standard-bearer. Gold foil, horse stopper. What most people picture.
Blanton's Straight From the Barrel — Cask strength, typically 120+ proof, not cut with water after barreling. This one is mostly exported to Japan and Europe, making it exceptionally hard to find stateside. When it shows up, it goes fast.
Blanton's Gold — A step up from Original, higher proof (103), and a gold-themed presentation. More available than Straight From the Barrel but still allocated.
Blanton's Special Reserve — Lower proof (80), softer expression, less common in the U.S. market. Sometimes called the "international" Blanton's.
If you're building out the set or hunting the harder-to-find expressions, reach out to us directly — inventory on the rarer variants shifts, and we'd rather give you a real answer than a website listing that may or may not be accurate.
Frequently Asked Questions
Q: Where can I buy Blanton's bourbon online? A: The Bourbon Concierge (thebourbonconcierge.com) carries Blanton's Original Single Barrel in stock with no minimum order. We ship to most states and offer stopper selection when available.
Q: What are the Blanton's stopper letters and which is the rarest? A: There are 8 unique stoppers spelling B-L-A-N-T-O-N-S, each featuring a different jockey position. No single letter is definitively rarer than others and it varies by production batch and region. The perceived rarity of any given letter is often local and timing-based.
Q: Is Blanton's a good anniversary gift? A: Yes! It's one of the best bourbon gifts you can give. The presentation (iconic bottle, hand-applied wax, metal horse stopper) is gift-ready without extra wrapping effort. At ~$129–$150 from reputable retailers, it's a premium gift that doesn't require a second mortgage.
Q: How much does Blanton's cost? A: MSRP is around $69.99, but allocated bottles rarely sell at MSRP outside of lottery systems at distilleries. Reputable online retailers typically price Blanton's Original between $120–$160. Be cautious of prices well above this range and equally cautious of prices suspiciously at or below MSRP from unknown sources.
Q: What's the difference between Blanton's Original, Gold, and Straight From the Barrel? A: Original is 93 proof, the accessible entry point. Gold is 103 proof, a step up in intensity. Straight From the Barrel is cask strength (usually 120–130+ proof), uncut, and largely an export product and the most intensely flavored and hardest to find domestically.
Q: Can I choose which Blanton's stopper letter I get? A: At most retailers, no. At The Bourbon Concierge, add the letter at checkout and we'll do our best to match you with a specific letter from current inventory.
The Bottom Line
Blanton's is special. It deserves to be on your shelf, in your glass, or wrapped up beautifully for someone whose taste you respect. The hunt for it shouldn't be the whole story.
At The Bourbon Concierge, we've built something that we think the bourbon world needed: a place where allocated bottles are actually available, where you're treated like a person with discernment and not just a transaction, and where the details — the right letter, the careful packing, the human on the other end of the message — actually matter.
We're not the cheapest. We're the most reliable. And in the world of allocated bourbon, reliability is worth more than a few dollars.
