The 2022 growing season benefited from late fall rains of 2021. With this nutrient storage, the vines relied on their reserves to usher them through the following drought year. Dry winter conditions prompted early bud break, but a cool spring elongated bloom. Moderate temperatures throughout most of the summer meant veraison aligned with a more historic ripening calendar.
Late-season heat punctuated the final stages of the vintage. In these moments, we saw the benefits of practices put into place years prior. In 2017, we honed techniques to build resilience against climactic pressures in younger vines and preserve more mature vines. By 2022, the makeup of the vineyard was predominately older vine material, and they beautifully weathered the heat. For the small percentage of new plantings, optimal row orientation, spacing, and shade management aided them through this period. This heat encouraged ripening and the smaller clusters accelerated harvest. Picking commenced on September 9 with our younger vines in the Riviera block, and concluded on October 1 in our Limelight block. The fruit showed exceptional phenolic ripeness, great levels of acidity, and an elegant balance.
Our 2022 unfurls with a lifted bouquet of complex and intense aromatics. Ripe plum and a bushel of red and black cherries give way to herbal and spice notes, all underpinned by tobacco and dark chocolate. On the palate, the plush dark fruit ushers in savory, earth-bound notes of iron and crushed rocks, while cassis and cocoa weave throughout. Our signature firm yet fine-grained tannins frame the medium body, and the bright acidity provides a lively freshness. The broad and enveloping texture leaves a long, lingering finish in its wake.

The Kavalan Distillery in Taiwan was founded in 2005 by T.T. Lee, president of the Taiwanese food conglomerate King Car Group. His greatest wish was to open his own whisky distillery in Taiwan. Kavalan is the name of the Yilan region, which lies southeast of the capital Taipei. An important reason for choosing this location is the excellent water quality. In Yilan, there is enough cold spring water flowing through Snow Mountain. The Solist range of Kavalan Distillery includes specially selected barrels from the Master Blenders. These barrels are known for their individual character and fine quality. 'Fino' is the Spanish word for 'fine' and is the driest and lightest of all traditional sherries. This whiskey matures in the finest Fino sherry casks. FREDDIE'S NOTE
With “Lessons Honored” I wanted to pay homage to my father, Fred, and the lessons he passed down about bourbon and life. A lot of the lessons Dad taught me go back to honesty and integrity. Being true to yourself is something that’s very important in our family and that carries over into our whiskey brands. Each liquid was chosen because of a connection to my dad and a lesson he taught me. The base of the blend is a Kentucky Straight Brown Rice Bourbon which reminds me of the first project I ever really handled on my own at the distillery. The “high rye” rye whiskey is an ode to Booker’s Rye, an award-winning product created in 2017 and one of the first that Dad and I tasted together. It was a legendary release in honor of my granddaddy Booker Noe, and it was very special to play a small part in selecting and bottling the liquid with my dad. The last liquid Dad actually helped pick, though he didn’t know it at the time. I brought him samples of a few liquids at different ages, and he ultimately picked this 7-year old Kentucky Straight Bourbon Whiskey, which is representative of our Small Batch Collection.Crafting this bourbon wasn’t as difficult as previous years, because I had such a strong vision for the blend going into the liquid selection. In total, we tested 22 different blends in comparison to previous chapters where we tested more than 40. I spent most of my time perfecting the blend itself to balance the flavors and taste profile to create the final product. This year’s blue neck tag is also an ode to my dad’s favorite sports team

This is the fifth release in Mars’s Bakemono series and the second to come from the Mars Tsunuki Distillery in southern Kagoshima. It depicts a creeping old man named Mi-no-kedachi, or “standing up body hair.” This unsettling, hunched grandpa is theorized to be a spirit of fear or fret. Best shake off the shivers with a dram of full-bodied, peated whisky.
