High West BouRye (2014)

Hibiki means “Resonance” in Japanese. From its launch in 1989 to commemorate the 60th Anniversary of Suntory, Hibiki embodies the Suntory philosophy to live in harmony with nature and people. As the Founding House of Japanese Whisky and A House of Master Blenders, the House of Suntory has gone to great lengths to explore the breadth and depth of what Harmony can mean for a blend. Every Hibiki expression is one of the most sought after blends in the world where every Hibiki expression is meticulously crafted for us to discover a different kind of Harmony. Achieving the right balance and orchestration proved to be a great challenge from the start since the Sakura cask is one with strong character that can easily become overbearing. 

After much trial and error, we found that the grain whiskies finished in the Sakura cask best elevated the overall balance as a Blossoming Harmony slowly unfolding. The end result is a particularly unique expression of Hibiki. The invitation of an enticing floral bouquet, followed by the signature Hibiki depth and complexity of honey, candied orange peel, jasmine and chocolatey decadence, all climaxing to a surprising finish of bitter sweet spicy notes.

The deep rich color of Tagalong Batch comes from the mid-to-high rickhouse floor locations where these barrels have matured. With pronounced aromas of caramel and vanilla, balanced with the sweet brown wood sugar flavor notes from the charred white oak barrels, this batch carries a bold flavor with a surprisingly clean finish - making you want to come back for another sip.

The Bakemono Zukushi, or "Monster Scroll" can be traced to Japan's Edo period in the 18th or 19th century. The scroll depicts an array of Japanese yokai (spirits) who are taken from the country's local folk lore. The fourth edition of this series features a single unpeated New American Oak hogshead cask from the Komagatake Distillery in Nagano that depicts the large snakelike creature Sarahebi. Also known as a "Nure-onna" not much is known about these mysterious spirits who were thought to come from the sea and rivers.

Cask #2 in the Bakemono Zukushi “Monster” Scroll-inspired series depicts Daichiuchi, the earthquake maker! This mohawked monster has a bird-like face and wields a mallet—a forceful creature that makes a fitting mascot for this robust, peaty single cask whisky distilled at Mars Tsunuki.

Rochelt Distillery Basel Cherry Schnapps is a cherry schnapps made from the sour wild cherries that grow in the Jura Mountains, where Rochelt Distillery Basel is located. The cherries are harvested in late summer and autumn, and the juice is fermented to produce a clear, sweet spirit. The spirit is then aged in oak barrels for a minimum of two years, during which time it develops a rich, complex flavor. Rochelt Distillery Basel Cherry Schnapps is a versatile spirit that can be enjoyed neat, on the rocks, or mixed in cocktails.

Aged twelve years at Buffalo Trace Distillery, this bourbon is rich and sweet, drawing its character from barrels made of French Oak. Cynar is a much loved Italian bitter liqueur, named for the artichokes (Cynara Scolymus) that are the main flavouring ingredients. This is from the 1970s.

Established in 2018 by a company with long standing expertise making traditional Japanese drinks, their is one overarching principle at Yuza - quality above all. Nothing will compromise this mission and even at a fledgling age like this inaugural release, you can taste how special this whisky is.
